Hibernation
I’m hiding my true self for some day
after the long winter of my life subsides.
I’m wearing this uncomfortable mask until spring
when I get to take it off
and inhale that deep, glorious breath of fresh air
I keep dreaming about.
I try to nurture my inner girl,
to sustain her and keep her alive,
feeding her a steady diet of Taylor Swift,
romantic comedies,
and dreams.
I’m saving the good china for a party
I may never get to throw.

I, personally, like the final 7 lines…
I really like how the poem ends.
The imagery and repetition of dreaming/dreams drives the point of the poem, and its title, home. Where the speaker is now is not the desired final destination, but a process begs to be followed. We hope the journey can be completed and, as time time goes on, becomes less of an ordeal for others.
the poem hints at the value of hibernation as a time of growth, particularly during adolescence or periods of trauma
I feel this in my bones, Josie. You might think your situation is not relatable, but I assure you that it is. We are all in hibernation of one kind or another, waiting for spring.
Yes, this sense of self/not-self/waiting self really is universal, whether individuals realize it or not. You’ve put it into words so beautifully.
This is a beautiful poem. I see you!
