Illiterate (Inspired by Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous)
Language is more than
Writing letters–
Making sounds.
Anyone could do that
(given the chance)
But few can use their vocal cords
and their mouths
and their tongues
and their hands as tools,
contraptions of sorts.
A hammer
to make their way through
Deaf ears
And closed minds.
A screwdriver
to tighten up
what’s keeping together
Our humanity.
Language is more.
Oh, so much more.
It is
the music played
based on the score
Of the performer’s deepest self.

I can’t express enough how much I agree
except by flooding the Grand Canyon
with college-ruled basketballs
and post-consumer fringes
tugged through the spiral.
That is some title! I like the idea of crediting Ocean Vuong.
How could I not?! His words have forever changed me, he deserves the credit. Have you had the chance to read that book?
This poem is a beautiful reflection of the true spirit of those who dare to create. Great work!
Thanks for reading, Katrina!
I love Ocean Vuong, too, and so appreciate you putting down what his words inspire in you.
He’s something else. Thanks for reading, Ellen <3
I like this perspective a lot, well done!
Thanks 🙂
Well, you had me at Ocean Vuong! I like your tool kit of language and music and the elevation to spirit and soul.
Hahaha, right? His name is more than enough. Thanks for your kind comments, Sylvia.
