Last Counsel
At the end, struggling to breathe,
Mom announced I never thought I would die.
“Really?” I said. “Do you know how much
time most people squander worrying
about their death?”
Why on earth would anyone do that?
you said, fading. It takes a few minutes,
that’s all.

Economical and powerful. Love Mom’s outlook and wisdom. Shape of the poem is wonderful, too.
Nice. I like the way “squander” is used. Good choice.
This poem is much lighter than a typical deathbed scene, yet it retains its sincerity. I love the way you portray your mother not as desperate or frightened but calm, weightless. Thank you for sharing this wisdom with us.
Love the ending
Oh to be like your mother. We can learn here. Beautifully written!
This poem sits in my chest. Thank you for sharing it.
