I know
a lynching when I see one
being a scared cop means
you can put 7 shots into a car
with a baby in the backseat
and walk away.
being brown and scared and
compliant with instructions given
by the police means nothing.
they can still put 5 in your side
and walk away.
So why are we being compliant again?

Thank you for your words. Today, I wrote about the verdict in this case as well as another. After I uploaded my work, I saw your poem. The word “compliant” has been stuck in my head all afternoon and evening. I tell my students to be compliant in situations with authority figures because it will help them. Today I feel like I’m feeding them lies.
