Pastiche
Pastiche
after “Five Landscapes” by Cole Swensen
egret
door
sheet
all white
and I’m at a loss to choose an-
other shade so indiscriminate
in its application what
of
rouge
fire coral
beach glass
would one elide as well
disguise itself as half-
of
?
unapproached for weeks
my brushes shift
bottoms ever so
slightly
weighting
the air flaked colores nest-
le in grooves & malleable ones
sigh wanting to roll the light
off to one side or other
where in each painting
is that spot of unnamed hue
mutating into
shadow of sky
lost marble
feather
?

Brigit – I love your interpretation/reflection of Swensen’s poem! The sparse language is beautiful, and I love the lines
“malleable ones/sigh wanting to roll the light/off to one side or other” and how you bring life to the brushes. Swensen draws colors to white, you expand the white into colors. Not sure I get the ??, but the ending is spectacular!
THANK YOU!! The “?” was just a way of leaving the question focused and unanswered, but it was a preliminary attempt. Maybe not successful but isn’t that what LexPoMo is for as well?? I so appreciate all feedback!!
