permission papers
i want to know if it would be ok
if i did not write a political poem?
after all, you are my chosen community
and i want to be a good citizen.
my mom taught me the golden rule
my dad could have been a transcendentalist
if he would have graduated 7th grade
instead of enlisting in the Marines
i want to know if it would be ok
if i did not write a political poem?
after all, the scientific names for my stuff
are exactly like the scientific names for your stuff
and I want to be a good citizen.
my own children are doing great!
they are cancelling out most of my votes
although they did learn practical trades
i want to know if it would be ok
if i did not write a political poem?
after all, i want to be a good citizen.
you are the ones taught me
not to hold my breath so much, but
i fear your sharp stick on my nose
you make me feel uneasy, unseen, alone
instead of complaining, i just want to know
would it be ok if i did not write a poem?

nuanced long form no longer flies 🙁

Good political poems are hard to write (Maxine Kumin was a master) so the cleverness of yours is outstanding. You ASK the question everyone else is ANSWERING and by varying it in the last line you imply the difficulty of the situation.
I have been thinking of Ed Dorn and Louis Zukofsky and condensation and voice and moving on. My issue with the long form poem is that you aren’t just mastering form. I would like to try it some day.
I love your approach — the tone is perfect. The repetition really works too. This is a success.
Love this observation, “they are cancelling out most of my votes.” This is such a thoughtful piece, and thought provoking.
Love this. I love the form, and also totally get the content. I’ve hesitated to get involved in political debate for the very reason you name: those sticks up one’s nose can be awful sharp.
Clever and winky;)
I struggle to write a political form well. Yours is unique and creative.
Love this question and structured repetition.
Well done!
