right now
i wonder if
this cockroach,
who spent its life
hiding and eating
garbage, died on
its back because
it was searching
for god, if roaches
even care about god,
or if it was just a spasm.
maybe that’s all
god is anyway,
a soul spasm

I love the movement you make here with the image of a roach “searching/for god”
thanks, shaun!
There’s something about a cockroach lying on its back searching for God that is very poetic!!
thanks lol—and he was just there on the sidewalk
Shew! “maybe that’s all/god is anyway,/a soul spasm”
thanks, pam—that line just hit me at the end, so i went with it
Ha! Love the wry tone.
thanks, ellen! you’ve read enough of my poems to hear my voice lol
I love this poem. And not just because one of the initiations for the Starlight Teenage 4-H Club was to lie on our backs and chant, “I am a dying cockroach.”
thanks, roberta—that’s the best initiation story i’ve heard, and it deserves a poem! ha!
Great to see your poems again. And to see you this evening!
such a lovely surprise to run into you and owen, and it does feel good to be writing again after a lull
