sunrise incinerates the darkness

clouds lie still above the horizon
heat creeps through half-open windows
rectangle screens keep insects out (supposedly)

it’s a breathtaking beginning
summer’s start
until my memory returns

darkness will stitch itself together with precision
preventing light from piercing Earth’s shadow

i’ll be waiting,
watching the sky for precious radiance to bust those seams —
to fill my heart once more
