Marking Time
Five years
To write the story
That lasted only four
In the last twenty-odd years
Half my forty-plus
I always remembered
How from seventeen
To twenty-one
I aged from a girl
Into an old woman
From a soldier
Into a veteran
And I shall never forget
That time
Whether I die tomorrow
Or if I Iive to ninety-nine

Great poem.
Once in the service,
always in the service.
A heavy burden — I hope it eases. Thank you for sharing this lovely work.
Like those first 3 lines—really pulls reader into poem
