the abolitionist
“We know, every one of us, that in the end all will be well, for God will care for us and give us victory and peace. And when peace comes, remember, it will be for us, the children of today, to make the world of tomorrow a better and happier place.” Elizabeth II, October 1940
without contradiction i
worry about climate change
as i sit hunched over my phone
like any good abolitionist
wringing her hands in a cotton smock
despite ever rising prices
i ship my shopping choices
on the long slog to my front door
as i rest easily in myself
that all of us are doing the right things

Jules – Dark humor – good choice! The no capitals fits well with theme – makes you/us seem small compared to the world out there – love “the long slog” –
Well done and painfully funny.
The ‘abolitionist’ wringing hands in cotton, the consumer using next-day shipping, yet at the same time ‘worried’ about climate change. It’s interesting seeing historical and modern hypocrisy hand in hand. Well done with this.
That end hits hard. Well crafted piece!
Very good, modern commentary with receipts!
I can hear your voice and it love love the unpunctuated form you are using.
Good word choices. Love it!
Thanks to all y’all.
I like to think of snark as a sub-specialty of mine.
one way or the other, we try.
the poem revels in its hypocrisy
“as i rest easily in myself
that all of us are doing the right things”
I love this ending!
