The Process
Carefully remove the burning piece
of shrapnel from your heart.
While it’s still glowing red, hammer it
into shape with endless revisions.
Plunge it into the water of detachment
and let it cool down for a while.
Word by word, grind off
any excess material.
Hone the edge until it’s barely there.
Polish the blade until some people can
see themselves reflected in it just
before the point enters their heart.

Something haunts me about “..the water of detachment.” I wish I could tap that water more often. Nice imagery!
Yes, what a powerful image/idea: “the water of detachment.” Thank you, Larry!
This poem perfectly represents the care we must take with words, especially when it comes to approaching a confrontation with another person. It’s exactly the kind of poem I needed to read today.
GREAT
The Process of writing a poem.
