Trash Collection in Heaven
Yes, there is trash at the Gate to Heaven.
After all, we are each carrying
a lot of garbage with us as we arrive.
Someone has got to keep The Place clean!
But it’s not those who collected the trash
Earth-side.
They are saints.
They were good friends and family–
unofficial therapists,
lovers and partners,
pastors and priests,
strangers who gifted
kindness and respect–
relieving us of our burdens–
but, most of all,
the actual “garbage men”,
who were anything but–
year after year, they
carried away our refuse,
without complaint or
thanks
purifying our lives–
saints all

what an imaginative frame/first line of the poem (they’ve been starting their day at 4:30am lately to try to beat the heat)
Thank you, Gaby! I’m glad they are starting earlier–much safer!

Laughing at the humor and truth in that first stanza!
And yes!, blessings to the sainted “garbage men”.

love this. i also love that you can tell how a person lives their life by the trash they throw out and things they consume. what an image to ponder–what our trash may look like at those gates. thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Carter! I agree, we can tell much about a person from the things they throw away.
What an interesting and lovely image. I love “After all, we are each carrying/a lot of garbage with us as we arrive.”
