Bio for 2025

Brian McCarty is an instructor at Western Kentucky University, where he teaches a variety of writing courses. A former high school dropout, he was saved from years of "quiet desperation" by his passion for writing poetry and his insatiable interest in art, including Thelonious Monk, Jack Kerouac, Surrealism, and film noir (he would eventually earn his doctorate in post-WW2 film and literature). Other interests that likely inspire his poems are: Zen and Taoist philosophy, David Lynch, 1960s postmodern fiction, indie rock and drone music, Syd Barrett, the aforementioned Thelonious Monk, and the endlessly surprising joys and challenges of being dad to 2 little and totally amazing kiddos. That being said, his poems are pretty straightforward and silly. He also enjoys exploring the mountains, studying and writing about literary and filmic representations of the built environment, and creating Spotify playlists. His apologies for the ramble--he really couldn't think of anything to say.
