Teenage Son

Pizza crust and Cheeto dust,
smelly socks and Finn’s Xbox.
A piercing here, a tattoo there,
can’t find his phone anywhere.
Stealthy creep, then hours of sleep.
Never sunny, rarely funny,
craves a honey, needs some money.
Taunting jeers mask the fears
of looking dumb while trying to become
somebody nothing like me.

Teach Me How to Make Lemonade

A years-old news clip tells the story of a teen
girl who lost one leg & two fingers in a brutal
bull shark attack. When interviewed, her father
recounts a living nightmare, how he repeatedly
punched the predator in the face until it released
his child, now a young woman who works in ocean
conservation. She rocks a prosthesis, electric blue
hair, & a brilliant smile as she looks at the camera
& insists, Sharks are still good people.

Juvenile

For some usually evil end
I’ll get my Machina up
and poke a hole in the raft
of my dear old Deus Ex

Everything needs poking now & then,
even if it’s God, she says, and proceeds
after my bedded body with an Amish
broomhandle, mad that I’d slept on the couch
again, adrift in a mindless stream
of Nabokov describing the perfect female
mid-drift, full of sour candy and lint

But it’s art, I say, of the best kind,
one that casts the penis into brine,
one that becomes real in a man’s dream

to be read aloud

for such a time as
this
quiet defiance
I will not rue the
day
despite what one might
think
story is mine to
write
freedom is found when
I can sing my praise

freedom is found when
I can sing my praise

freedom is found when
I can sing my praise

The Jubilee of Dementia

Sad to find out who I was
I’d had high hopes for me

I didn’t change the course of rivers
Treasures I collected turned to dust

All my goals were rabbit holes
The medal round my neck, an albatross

Answers still blow in the wind
but now they have no words

I must have lived another’s life
Regardless, all will be discharged in bankruptcy

Rainy Saturday Morning

Rooster crowing, wind blowing
Trees bending, creek wending
Thunder cracks, branch smacks

Pinky Swear

I made myself a promise

Every time I think of you I have to write instead of call

Something tells me I won’t hold on to that for long

But for now, it feels right

Healing even

So when I imagine you walking the streets of New York

Or think about the comment you left on my post

Or guess the feeling you had when you wrote me back

Or remember that tomorrow’s your birthday

I don’t break my promise

Untitled

I wasn’t expecting her

This light in the darkness
I didn’t even realize I was living in
A lamp flipped on the corner
Of my mind
Allowing me to see the path ahead

Going Home

This evening’s sunset
looms along darkening sky,
portending goodbye.

Poem

the dishwater maladies, mind your manner

the star-stoked

eigengrau gone blue
as the fumes of a trembling
engine in early winter, yearning
yearling yodeling up to pa-
chinko its plaintive bray amongst
flash-froze gods caught
flinching as twinkling
mars mars ocherous
haze encasing a glass-
y-eyed dallas in dazzling, callusing
gold, macadam corroded to arteries—see

the cherry unfolding from
ash, the taciturn gash of a vision in-
censing flesh from pins and
needles nettled up
under a hen-
picked frisson to some
bright boat tail grackle en-
gendering what mere mood
that dares to turn dear dread to
doom, endeared as leerily peering
truth, as the pin-
hole soil’s stirred by the
dervishing rains, deranged into
quantum foam or frantic flowers
floundering, seam-ripped
stars still pinning our
hearts in place
as the hare’s
long ears loom
over the muttering
grass blades, baby’s
breath un-
bound, all
floundering
homeward, grey
ground down to a pearl
and the dishwater maladies
rambling now in sweet sigils
inscribed in sinewy cheese and
clam-gilt streaks of simpering grease—how

dishwater lapping enamelized iron might
knead your knees into ticklish slinkies,
strutting past Keats toward moaning
Moneta or crepe myrtle claiming
a kinship with Mithra, or
Midas, or mars, or the
slobbering minotaur,
some smug, swollen
arroyo entrained by but
bilious pacing to buckle
or brace the ubiquitous rain to
march in just one miserable manner,
precluding some doom-struck flood, perchance,
some mood entranced with but brandishing
enmitous echoes against what
dew drop’s dubious shadowkin
dancing—glance now, there, be-

tween buoying corn and the gum-
grey shreds of spaghetti, this
nacreous breaker flipped
over some toast-point
quay on which
everything beckoning
here and away seems
gravy goo or luminous hymnal
snagged twixt driftwood stag horns
balanced on point, a collusion of gloom-
y no-see-ums incensed to seem here some-
thing akin to the feeling of foil freed, the fragrance
of pencil shavings pestling only                  : |
