Teach Me How to Make Lemonade
A years-old news clip tells the story of a teen
girl who lost one leg & two fingers in a brutal
bull shark attack. When interviewed, her father
recounts a living nightmare, how he repeatedly
punched the predator in the face until it released
his child, now a young woman who works in ocean
conservation. She rocks a prosthesis, electric blue
hair, & a brilliant smile as she looks at the camera
& insists, Sharks are still good people.

Chelsie: What I love about this poem is how you don’t need to add anything, not a single poetic flourish. The facts reported in the story were more than enough, a little like erasure. Solid journalism, too. When are you coming back to the group?
Great title. Well told story. Love the ending.
your poem made me cry
Exactly what Lee said. And like Gaby it made me cry.
Love the story and how you show her bright spirit “She rocks a prosthesis, electric blue/hair, & a brilliant smile “
If only we could all have that sort of optimism!
Lovely story to start my Saturday. I love the ecstatic feel you give the last lines.
Great one. So positive and uplifting.
The title is brilliant.
