Bigmouth
Latent memories circle
in viridescent waters
lurk in murky depths
Obscured beneath protection
of entangled roots
bright fleeting flashes
Gone before I can hook
them with my inner eye
looking for forms refracted
A frustrating half-step ahead
of my tickling fingers
impatient
For the barest brush
of scales against skin
I will grasp the gills
Jerk one to the surface
silvery-slick and wriggling
under scrutiny
Bite off its head and let it leak
raw onto these pages
before I forget again

Oooo fishy, Jen! I love how you describe the act of pinning down our slippery thoughts. The way you use words in this one is great. “Bite off its head and let it leak / raw onto these pages” is my fav. Fleeting fish sink in my think tank. Lol xo
Thanks for the feedback Em, “lingering fish sink in my think tank” sounds like the first half of a haiku lol
Wonderful! I believe this has a place in the book!
Those damn memories are buried in there pretty deep!
Brava!!! Love the imagery and tone!!
Thanks Amy 🖤
“For the barest brush of scales against skin” is the sensation that gets me. I know exactly what you ate talking about. Brilliant poem!
Appreciate that Philip!
