Aquarium Mermaids
smile with bubbles stuck between gleaming teeth,
tendrils of cheap wig floating
as they wave at me
from behind the glass, but tail or not, they
remind me of the old woman who carried her tank
of air on a walker, every week told me how much I’d grown.
I look away while the mermaids take a hit of oxygen.
