Dear Wish
You’re a crave
Of many colors
We strap you to stars
That surf the night sky
Etch you on coins
Tossed to a watery resting
Crack holiday bones
To get our way
A fallen eyelash
Floats desire
We huff the dust
From dying dandelions
Attach you to lists
For family and friends
Awaken you from the deep
Of genie bottle or magic lamp
Set your candles on fire
Then blow you out
But it’s not all
Bad
Foundations of hope
Honor your name
Our best ones cover
Any occasion
Even Disney dances
Puts you to music
We’re a strange bunch
Whimsical in our yearnings
I wish you well!

What a wonderful concept you’ve got going here, and how beautifully executed, especially this one. Congrats!
Thanks, Kevin! Once I limited myself to that framework, the world opened its door and invited me in.
I think you’ve covered all the ways we wish, incredible. Whimsical in our yearnings — so true,
Oh, there were so many more I had to leave by the wayside! Thanks for reading, Bill.
How beautiful, Sylvia! All the ways we wish. May the good ones all come true. This poem is a wish granted for us all. Yes!
Yes, wishes are fun, but I read that the two things people wish for most are love and money. The rest falls to prayer.
This poems strikes me for it’s whimsey. but even the eyelash feels substantial.
Smartly crafted! You capture the wish in all its forms. What a delightful read.

Thank you for reading and commenting, Eric. Let kindness be contagious (I’m still thinking of your poem!)
Thanks, Linda! I remembered the eyelash from an old Seinfeld episode.
That closing line is so perfect
Thanks for reading, N. D.!
a list poem with a difference. btw, Sylvia, I love your verb choices: strap, etch, crack, float, huff, attach, awaken, set. I haven’t forgotten your lesson
My verbs salute and laud your keen eye, Gaby!
A catalog of vehicles for wishes! Very, very nice. And I love the last couplet. Yup, we are a strong bunch and whimsical.
I had greedy originally since wishes are mostly self-serving, but Disney made me change it to whimsical! Thanks for reading!
And wishing on a fallen eyelash is a new one to me.
This list is amazing, Sylvia, and the direct address is so clever all the way to the last line.
Thank you, Nancy! This is the first year I’ve gotten this far with a poem a day. It’s a challenge, but this site is so inspiring! I feel like I found a treasure chest!
I saw this as an ode to fellow poets!
If wishes were poets . . . .? Thanks for reading, Linda!
You have given us an amazing list detailing the life of a “wish” with so many different venues. I can hear that Disney song “When you wish upon a star” swirling through my mind. Well-crafted poem that is a delight to read.
Thank you so much, Lee! Since I started thinking about wishes, I noticed how often people use the word in daily life!
Wonderful personification of a wish! The superstitions and rituals- so visceral of our hopes. I especially love “We huff the dust / From dying dandelions”. “We’re a strange bunch…”! (Yes!)
Very well done, Sylvia!
