Dropped in from Another Century
The woman in the poetry seminar
tries too hard to be obscure
in an Edgar Allan Poe kind of way,
18th Century melodrama, her milieu.
Striving for mystery–
after the fact, she’ll explain
what it all means–trauma
from childhood.
She should just add a footnote to each poem
for an ordinary English translation.

If the poem didn’t say it, why did she write it. I don’t get people wanting to explain the meaning of their poems and it almost always takes longer than the poem did
Striving for mystery – perfect
Your poem says in a very kind way what my first poetry professor said. If he caught you explaining a poem in a workshop, he would rip it up and grade you on your explanation of said poem then proceed to lecture you on sounding like a “flowery dumbass” (his words not mine). The writing did get better, but half the class dropped.
