I tell my students —
give me words that set
my hair ablaze and my soul
aching for more poems

Well said! It was my mother and a college professor who truly introduced me to literature, and then the rest was history.
And a fine history indeed! Thank you so much, John.
Excellent advice. Love this, E.E.!
Thank you, H.A.
Yes!
Thank you, Kevin. I appreciate the affirmation from a pro!
I love that! I teach middle school, what do you teach?
At the moment on haitus, but I want to get back to it. (Taught creative writing and “writing, rhetoric and digital media.”)
Creative writing would be challenging to teach but also fun?

Yes!!
Thank you, Rebecca!

<3 backatcha!
Very nice – love the image of the hair ablaze.
Thank you, Nancy. Wimpy word choices undermine the strength of a poem. I’d tell my students, “Use a thesaurus. IT’S ON YOUR PHONE!” LoL
Great advice, E.E. (Roget is one of my favorite authors!)
Thank you, Sylvia! And if they INSISTED on rhyme, I’d introduce them to the miracle of the rhyming dictionary. LoL And then I’d belabor them with the KINDS of rhymes. (“If you like rap, you know about internal rhyme. Yes, Rap is a kind of poetry.”) 😉
Yes! So happy you teach an expansion version of poetry -it’s a large umbrella!

Fortunate students to receive such advice. Now we have received it, too. Thank you, E. E.
Thank you so much, L.
Every word in this poem is like breath on fire! Well done!
Wow! Thanks, Pam!
I can only say that I wish I’d had a teacher like you! Loved this…..
Thank ever so much, M. I was far from perfect, but I threw my whole self into it. When I completed my MFA at UKy, I won the “Best TA” award for 2021-2022 school year. I taught Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Media that year. I think I got the award because I really cared about my students, even beyond their classroom needs. We were just back in person after shut down. It was a tough time for the students.
At the end of each semester that year, I gave several “extra credit” opportunities. One of the choices was to write 3 poems based on their research project that semester. I read some awesome work!
