Rental Condo
This efficiency apartment is the definition
of sterile, soul-draining–
it could be emptied in five minutes.
Barebones, the bed comes out of the wall,
hard, neutral surfaces,
nothing inviting, memorable. But in all
this spartan starkness, a small potted
orchid, the kind you pick
up in a grocery store in a white plastic cup
saying someone human was here trying
to bring a breath of beauty
into this spare comfortless space.

I adore the spartan compression you have here. Then the humanity, so simply shown. Love your poem and admire it.
Thank you Manny
What a beautiful thing to do! And now your poem has honored that gift.
Thank you Sylvia for that insight which had not occurred to me but of course you’re right
What great imagery of the orchid – such a soft display of humanity during the harshness of our current reality. Thank you for sharing, Pat!
Thank you for soft display of humanity
I agree with all of the above comments- you shows a spartan place with orchid as humanity. well done.
Love the visual image of something so exotically beautiful as orchid paired with the cheapness of the “cup” it’s in. Works so well with the overall theme, too.
Yes, dichotomy, juxtaposition so important
Beautifully composed with a touch of simple beauty – the orchid in the cup. A touch of kindness.
