On a day like this,

sun shining bright,
and a breeze that cuts
through humidity,
I forget about rain and thunder.
I am strangely content
to let the day flow,
a conversation with my son,
his curiosity entwined
with the assurance that he
is the arbiter of such knowledge,
his staff of life. Satisfaction
in the time spent doing nothing
but rocking the Chihuahua
like an infant,
who knows how much time
she has left?
She can have as many belly rubs
as she wants, and she wants more,
always more, and I too want more
of this life, more time to bask
in the glory of the sun,
more time to peel potatoes,
bake chicken, toss a salad,
serve the hungry family
as they circle around the table
to talk about their lives
and the fever that’s in the air.
