Ups and downs
There was a long time
I could’ve walked
down the hall
and visited
a third of
my world.
When we
existed together
I understood much
more than I do now.
Now I wake up quiet
to quiet too quiet
with only my
footsteps
to listen
for.

The string of uses for the word quiet creates a really effective tension in this piece.
The quiet in the wake of an absence is sometimes heard the loudest. Managing to visually build the ups and downs around the theme is an art in and of itself.
Can’t not say the word ‘quiet’ I feel. Fantastic way to express what is happening in the poem. Thank you so much for sharing this.
This is lovely- thanks for sharing. I love the way you have painted the ups and downs visually, and how you have transported us to this embodied experience of loss.
…could have visited a third of my world…is so poignant, and shows such loss.
