untitled

sell your soul
for a roof
fell through the holes
in your truth
hell turned cold
to the proof
that we pour
out for those who fell through
hello
can i help you
elbow
i can sell you
long arm of the law
been crooked as fuck
pawn off the claws
looks like it’s finally looking up
made a song with my flaws
devil cabbage I’m cookin up
can we get along with what we’ve lost
gotta keep it pushing for the bucks
could never get more than what’s gone has cost us
to reality i’m kyrie shook them for the rush
your sins put them all on the cross
elephant in the room took them for their tusks
hush hush
don’t get fired by the big boss
on the beat im your grandma
i’m cooking it with love
damn god why you took them
my blood

Herpetology Weekend

For twenty years I’ve tried to plan

a weekend with you, my best friend, in April

when we will follow other enthusiasts

through muddy trails and stony paths

to look at reptiles and amphibians

that represent our past forms

that we were lucky enough

to metamorphosize through.

The cursed aspects of my life since then

all stem from the promise I made you and our teacher

that we would enjoy the characteristics that define our life

before we learned to look past them.

I still struggle with the same mountains

that face me every day since those adolescent alms,

and even this year when I had not sold that Saturday

towards someone else’s goals,

I failed to orchestrate the simple journey

to bring us together once again.

Before another year takes another path from me,

I promise that we will go together there

even if we see not a single spring creature,

because the only creature I was wanting to see,

then and most certainly now,

was you, my friend, in our natural habitat.

Let’s consider this our invitation for next year.

Seed Yield

The oak is in its mast year again.

The squirrels know: they’ve returned
to the familiar tree after years away,
somehow—feuding over the acorn
fuel still forming high above the grass.
Their complaints, the tree never
hears. They quarrel in bright barks—
mine-o, thine-o, you can’t have it
and bristle up and down its branches,
small, and back only for this: potential
heavy in the green and swaying canopy.

Honeysuckle Memories

Your laughter
is the sweet honey
drawn from honeysuckle—

the childhood joy
so many of us lost
before we learned
the weight of toil.

Hold tight, sweet girl,
and throw your head back
as you swing.

Let the wind
steady your shoulders,
your legs carrying you
toward the sky.

May your imagination remain
a wildflower,
untamed and bright,
growing in the meadow
where generations before you
forgot how to wander.

Young rabbits tonight

                    Young rabbits tonight

I see three cross the road for Seventy Six Falls
up to the Maurice Thomas Road
            where my sister lives

and one darts into the driveway
            toward my brother-in-law’s house
and turns into the tall grass.

All the young rabbits are half grown
or less, even the one I watch
            run across my driveway

            at home.
            Cats prowl at night.
            Coyotes howl in the woods

            behind my house.
I am reminded of the rabbits
            taken to Australia

            where they had no predators.
            Rabbit proof fences were constructed
            to keep the rabbits out,

            so overpopulated they became.
            Needless to say,
I will dream of rabbits tonight.

no poem today

no poem today
just a sleepy eye closing
on our inkless nights
