Self-Portrait

When morning light across her eye
first cracks its gentle glow
she rises like the great undead
and whispers time to go

she finds her little apron
with the pockets all adorned
and ties it ’round her waist
so she can start the blessed morn

she stops quick by the wooden box
she keeps beside her bed
and softly pets the words inside
while thoughts grow in her head

she pads soft to the dining room
and sits down with her phone
oh my oh yes the friends are here
they’re coming one by one

now this one’s new, igniting,
and that one smells like home
and this one’s sad and that one
makes her feel much less alone

she fills her little pockets up
her hands no longer shake
as she puts down a poem, then
she will more poems take

take a poem, leave a poem
give thanks as you go
you know she really loves it here,
the packrat of lexpomo.

Infernus

(dis)
belief
fills my soul—
infernus &
indistinguishable discontent, yet
blue shadowed hue in the earth’s twilight wedge
serves to remind
me that I
can still
trust

The Knock at the Door

I heard a knock at the door
And my heart skipped a beat
The wind said “It’s not him”
It is only me

I heard a knock at the door
And my heart stood still
The odds said “It’s not him this time
Maybe someday it will”

I heard a knock at the door
And my heart felt sure that it would…
Doubt said “It’s not him
You just misunderstood”

I heard a knock at the door
And my heart could see
The past twenty years said “It’s not him
And it never will be”

I heard a knock at the door
And my heart still skipped a beat
Death said “It’s not him
You have to come with me”

Gemini Sun

you take your coffee dark, just like my eyes
fresh bitten nails tracing
wonders across our legs
curious of mind and steady of heart
your wind-chime laughter tells me all i need to know

Blue Bottles

She began collecting blue bottles at an early age
when her mother took her to yard sales and flea markets.
Her collection ranged from tiny to large,
apothecary to spirits, grocery to unknown.
Gleaned from dumps behind old farmhouses,
along riverbeds, windowsills of friends and old lovers.
Dark blue, rich cobalt, turquoise, light blue, bluish green,
the litany of hues filled shelves and boxes.
Blues calmed her and captured her spirit
as if a mystical wand waved over her.
She lined bottles up in front of windows facing the morning sun.
Rays filter through the panes sweeping sparkle across the room
like the light of stained-glass windows drenching the contours of her soul.

Under Gray Skies After a Summer Shower

all is quiet
after the rain
air doesn’t stir
no bird sings
a moment awake
with the thinking God
who sleeps

haiku reminder to breathe

it takes a while to
settle into the newness
different venue

perspective creates
comfortable adjustments
look around and breathe

Let the Body Sing

I walk into the small room tucked at the almost-end of a hallway.
I feel more than a little nervous about what I’ve committed to doing in this room.
However, if I want to grow, I might need to seek help beyond a book or a YouTube video.
But also, a book or a YouTube video cannot witness failure.

I feel more than a little nervous.
I want to fail or succeed in relative privacy and peace.
A book or a YouTube video cannot witness failure.
But also, there is no answer to questions like: “Am I doing this right?”

Though I want to fail or succeed in relative privacy and peace,
now I stand in the room so I can learn
the answer to questions like: “Am I doing this right?”
So I can learn to let my body sing.

Now I stand in the room so I can learn.
Because if I want to grow, I might need to seek help beyond a book or a YouTube video.
To let my body sing,
I walk into the small room tucked at the almost-end of a hallway.

Trail of Life

As we hike the trail of
    life, sharing can bring
    joy, meaning, and purpose
to our being and a smile
    or special moment can
    touch the heart during
    our journey.

anniversary

sixteen
what does it bring to mind

the sweet of this year is long past
it’s rendered now into meaning  the finality of one
and now today  yet another  long togetherness

what of this thing we call union  relationship  partnering  marriage
so long ago sixteen was a sweet
today  again   sweet is sixteen
and in the between  that bitter  that  past  that’s done
