Into Nowhere & Beyond

She’d park her black Coupe Deville at the bottom and start her confident gait towards homes that looked like barns, trailers with no underpinnings, rusted siding and splintered wood all sharp and ready as cacti needle. No one ever shot a woman in pearls. You opened the door and took her in– her high pitched giggle and memorized speech like cursive butter full of features and guarantees. When you saw her beehive bopping up a trail all you could really do was prepare to be charmed. Startling as it was, like a real life commercial come to life, she promised you the work was already done. Before you knew it, she’d stain your carpets and clean them so bright you’d see them for the first time over. It was a magic trick that left immaculate threads like new bedsheets. You might feel tempted to lay down against the soft fresh floor and rest awhile. With sales pitches like storytelling, Naomi Ratcliffe was a stout five-ten of cloudy salt-and-pepper hair and low heels. She’d walk right in with her long pencil skirts and pantyhose, the collared shirts with the severe shoulder pads, all her rings and scarves and sunglasses. Like a movie star, she’d track that red clay in and smile and smile, even when someone remembered her husband. She’d sell two to all who knew the stories of how he’d whisper like an astronaut into the vacuum hoses, how he turned a knife on the family, convinced he was the hero of the story. But it was her who’d hiked up all those holler gravel paths. It was her who waved her arm until it hurt. She swore she knew all’you’all’s mommas’andem until she’d charmed the whole of Pike County, until she had to start cooking the books. But even God forgave her for that in the end.

Sestina, A Sestina

I tumble in, directionless to start
Just thinking I would see where this would go
Assembling words and choosing poem’s form
Without first thinking of a central theme
Just letting the words flow upon a page
With easy access to a Delete key

One stanza down, yet still no sign of key
Components one should have at poem’s start—
Aside, of course, from blankness of a page;
I speak more of the knowing where to go
Deciding on a true and perfect theme
Which should be more important than the form

Another stanza down, fulfilling form
And words ever so slowly turn the key
Within my mind, unlocking the true theme—
Which, once more, should have been there from the start!
Good thing there are still stanzas left to go
And ample space still left upon the page

Especially when digital, this page
Without the limitations of the form
Of paper—though harder when on the go
Which sometimes means it lacks the proper key
To let creative thoughts flow at the start
Which leads to fumbling for a proper theme

And see, once more I’ve not yet found a theme
Just set tangential stanza on the page
Even this far down from the poem’s start
Though somehow I’ve kept to sestina’s form
And maybe, for me, that’s the proper key
To seeing how this poem’s end will go?

For there’s only one stanza left to go
And the envoi. Yet still it lacks a theme
I’ve yet found something central, something key
Some deeper meaning to fill up this page
Only a ramble on sestina’s form
The rules I bound myself by at the start

Key left unturned, and nowhere left to go
Far from the start, far from coherent theme
Ah, well. I’ll close this page and rest the form.

Clancy’s bed

Cuddled in his round
plush-lined circular cushioned
bed comforting him
through the night on his own as
I snuggled in the Queen.

one year later you
have crossed rainbow bridge I miss
you so much since you left
Percy honors your bed and
never uses it you would
be a great big brother!

teaching him your ways
of gentleness, your old soul
wisdom of comfort,
instinct to  cocoon us humans
to a safe anchored harbor.

Happy heavenly birthday, Clancy!

Addiction is…

Addiction is the feeling of hot sauce hitting your tastebuds
Addiction is how your body feels after a warm massage
Addiction is the feeling of drinking water
Then immediately feeling thirsty right after
Addiction is flipping a pillow too it’s other cold side
Addiction is hitting your toe against a wall
Just to feel the sharp pain go through you
Addiction is staring up at the stars while listening to crickets chirping
Addiction is laying on your bed after your entire friend group deserted you
Addiction is taking a bite of your favorite food
Addiction is like every thought you make
Will come back to get you at some point
Addiction is everything you say and do
Will have the thought “this could be better”
Addiction is

Long Lost Lonesome Cinquains

Myrna.
Tattooed Goddess.
Biting deep an apple.
Its juicy tang, the fruited pang –
She’s gone.

Deadly.
Modifier
making suspect the day.
I wish I was born inside you—
blame god.

Obit.
Morbid pasttime
checking papers for you.
Come back to me in the morning
though dead.

Blame you.
Dusty corners,
swept aside in a jiff.
I wish I were with you now, love—
buried.

thumb-twiddled throat bone groping ad nauseam

(duchamp’s response upon

 cassius asking him just
 to contort a black
 velvet portrait of old
Hank Clay out of elmer’s glue and
 seventeen-hundred-and-seventy-five blue
dwarven sandstone colts run ragged in
 vying to tie
 up one pitiful
 run of the
 knight’s tour—all
 in one breath now) spoilt

meditations abound in the boils as
squiters scream, ad astra, it’s
blasphemy, pipe dreams—see

the cashiers whose names remain still
some sad poet’s sore and lordly handle,
harboring tepid green
gossip drawn to the
grin of an olio
slowly unfolding in                      kudzu,
riddled with swoln morning glories in-
flamed with the mudflap prospect tatters-
all wallflowers cud amongst quiet
critiques, the creaking neck of the
mayor bent whipping a chain-
bound bowling ball through bottle-
necked bus stops cobbled from
wallowed-out ear bones; noise
once sluthered up under the soul, Stan
Brakhage’s ping-ponged-pop-song-sort-of-
lottery foil-fleck rondo rollicking freely
as kids clipped chickenskin chain link free
from a sutured cut once, seventeen
times, now studded with
dominoed limestone shouldering
brushed steel rorschachs groping, a-
mong all the manifold meanings our
minds afford mere forms, no more than
here now cold, uncrumpled, unquestioning
horror—

            the treacly retreat of the
pollen percussing the fly’s-eyed
cars caught cribbing the concrete
curves, the buck-toothed gold
flake smoldering, laying its rot-
ten egg claim on a grave-
yard driveway, littered with
fingernail rubber and
rubbers resigned to play
squealing contortionist
sheep-shank poodle pup, peppering
hesitant heaven’s hems with
Japanese lilacs, grigs’ legs ground in
how many mountainous pounds of hot brown
peanut butter petering free from the slack-
jawed smoke stack, cackling, thankless,
hangry, digging its heels in the back of the
Ganges, vaguely
lamenting a bodice of
caution tape, caught toddling
off to play penitent fence-
post gracing the mad-libbed
ribs of unraveling
heaven’s gate grown
orange and red and
black as a blister bug
boyishly mocking some
mismanaged coral snake’s oddly
contorted, now autumnal, color-scheme,
humbly, grumbling, trying
its hand at
king—all the

woebegone indigo children entrained in an
arts-and-crafts house, staking their mood-
stone milk teeth into a buckle-bound building,
something that could’ve been
anything other than maybe
affordable housing crowned now
Vanderbilt’s Roman Bath House
Sound Clinic, once the place where
all of the art house arbiters coin-flipped
noise into music, here, now, swearing
what’s born of massaging a moaning
bowl should heal far more than any
old noise that birds and poets entoil
the static, miasmic, and gristle-licked air with

A Geography of Endurance Day 10

Porous and Enamored

Her only soft spot
is her lips—
I can tell
by the crescent imprints
of her teeth.

She traces every flaw
in the wood
while I watch, enamored.

Her fingerprints smear my buttons;
she signed her oath in spit and water.

She wakes at 100 mph,
drives two hundred miles
in the wrong direction—
blind
through Appalachian snow
and sunshine.

She walks heavy-footed,
chasing a sunset
we’ll never catch.

She only understands chaos.
Like a door pushed too hard,
she closes.

I am porous—
her emotions flood in.

I am hypersensitive
to the moment
she becomes herself again,
trying to birth
the child the hills left hidden within.

American Sentence CIV

Cowboy drew until buzz in his head grew still, staring night into day.
