Morning Dew

The heaviness of morning dew
a late summer moisture
turned  leaves
of the Hosta drinking gourd
into teacups filled
with the sweet juice of early dawn
until the sun released its warmth
sipping  tea in its wake.

trinkets

i buy a box

covered in florals
to hide tiny treasures in
a key
a flower
a worry stone
a dragonfly
a dinosaur
a mushroom
a crow
a duck
a capybara
i wear an orange ribbon
& hope to trade my trinkets
with other hopeful souls

a pink, purple, green heart shaped bag
full of the remnants
to hand in hand out
to make
a connection
a smile
a memory
a conversation
a breath
a lock
a heart
a worry taken away
i search for like ribbons
to make friendships
and sunshine

Climactic conversation

At table the brothers who share the legacy
in this season of unseasonable heat,
eight-hundred years after Francis of Assisi,
speak of changing climate and creation.

In this season of unseasonable heat,
we sing God’s praise through Brother Sun
and speak of creation, changing climes—
whose heat is amplified in our neglect.

We sing God’s praise through Brother Sun
unchanged—but change deniers rule the day.
Its heat is amplified in our neglect,
our common home cries out in pain

unchanged. The change deniers rule the day
but after eight-hundred years Francis
for our common home cries out in pain.
Today we all must share his legacy.

Heavy Hearted

I carry weight in my chest
Under the layers of muscle and fat
beneath every fiber and bone

I place my hand over my heart
it’s slow
heavy with something I’ve never been able to pinpoint
never been able to loose
despite all the diets I’ve been on
or therapist I’ve seen

” you’re  just heavy hearted” my mother tells me
“it’s not a bad thing”

But yet
they aren’t the one living with the constant ache in their chest
they don’t feel every sorrow filled beat struggle against every thought
every emotion and conversation

my pulse quickens
my heart drags through my chest
Struggling to keep pace

Dear Heart

More than blood and beat
You cull our savage shadows
Bless seed       Lust the moon

Bite

one who shadows
     like darkness clawing night

can not comprehend
     healing a hallowed soul

in surrendered grace—
     without drawing blood

or sacrificing himself
     consumed by shaded bite

Alternate Timeline

At Mississippi River Gorge between Minneapolis
& Saint Paul there’s a savanna with scattered
oak trees. Groundlayer of prairie grasses
& wildflowers. Off the walking trail, Jake O’ Reilly

& I found a wild, private patch. In this version
I wasn’t afraid of my body, so when he unzipped
his faded Levis I didn’t look away. My hair
tangled with coneflowers & black-eyed susans.

I embraced him feverishly, shut out the rest
of the world. In this version I smell him, taste him.
Jake got a steady job making sesame bagels.
In this version we made love several times a night.

Withdrawal

Everything was so vibrant before
Shapes and colors at which I’d never seen before
Like a mantis shrimp on acid
Eating Takiś til I throw up
Life was at an all time high

Everything is grey now
Activities I used to enjoy are void of fun
Food tastes just a little bit more bland
Thoughts of worthlessness and regret creep in like carrots
Struggling to keep a straight face for my family

Maybe just one more regret couldn’t hurt

Poem

first night alone in my post-grad apartment

Hey Siri,
what’s an easy dinner to cook for one?

Hey Siri,
what was my mom’s recipe for baked potatoes?

Hey Siri,
can you put aluminum foil in the oven?

Hey Siri,
turn on Love Island.

Hey Siri,
what are you doing this weekend?

Hey Siri,
look at flights from LAX to anywhere.

Hey Siri,
what was that sound?

Hey Siri,
put on some music.

Hey Siri,
turn the music off.

…

Hey Siri,
I didn’t think it would be this quiet.

Hey Siri,
was this a mistake?

Will it ever feel the same?
