Back room discovery
Is it for your wake
or someone else’s that
you have stockpiled too many bottles
of fine barrel aged whiskey?
time will tell.

I like the picture this paints. The wonder about the type of person who might prepare for their own wake like this, and the type of company they keep that could just as easily make the preparation for someone else instead. It also begs the question of how well the narrator knows the person who did the stockpiling–or even if it could possibly be self-referencial, and they themselves are still unsure of the answer.
The wake was an Irish custom of sitting up with the casket. Lead paint on the cups occasionally put the drinker into a deathlike state. It is believed some corpse would raise up suddenly, fully awake after the lead filtered out…
oh my gosh.

sometimes i look at the cabinets in my house and the bottles they contain and wonder what the heck is gonna happen to these if he dies?
i imagine setting them out for visitors when he’s gone, but then being embarassed too… because there’s so many.
