Growing Up on Orcas Island
Michael shovels wet snow for three days in late January. Electricity out on the entire island. We heat hot chocolate on the wood stove. Andrew and Kyle compose an original one-act, dress up to in vintage tweed suits, smoke fake cardboard cigars. Michael and I split a Guinness Stout and toast with paper cups. No school tomorrow and everyone’s hungry.

What a great snapshot of winter memories!
each line a delicious detail
Agree with the above, precise, gorgeous details. Hallmarks of a LBD poem.
I want to go there
be there
right now
even in a snow storm
❤️ love this.
Delightful, Linda. You put me right. There.
Wonderful descriptions, Linda. This reminded me of growing up in the country where in the summer, the one event of the day was the mail arriving around 3 o’clock.
The ordinary turns amazing in your hands!
Love the shape of the last stanza, like pancacks stacked on the plate. Delightful scene. Love; “smoke fake cardboard cigars.”
all great details, down to the socks drying at the hearth
Touching nostalgia, and evocative images!
You got me at wet socks.
You really bring this story to life.
Love how facts contain multitudes! What details.
Thank you for taking us to the island with you.
The shift in line lengths of lines in the final stanza illustrates the power of such art…
I love how whimsical the second stanza sounds, almost in contrast with the first–though of course there were whimsical moments there as well.
sizzle on the griddle – my new brain worm
