Ode to Unfinished Poetry

I search for seeds of inspiration
in pages covered with gashes bleeding
crossed-out sentences and words frantically scrawled
onto waiting lines before they could vanish into the bottomless pockets of my psyche
only to unearth poems decapitated
by a barren pen, silenced
before they could reach their fortissimo,
their endings long forgotten,
cast away by a careless wind.

Perhaps these poems are not condemned to blank decay but roaming
some foreign universe, searching
for purpose, destiny
just as we journey through our own lives with torch
in hand, hoping to find
our fulfillment hidden
in worn nuggets of traded wisdom, the flowering
fruit of our courage.

We are unfinished poetry, our endings
scrambled in a cyclone of conflicting dreams,
our tomorrows shrouded by an enigmatic haze.
The wonder of our lives is the fog that awaits
us, our present moments and the thrill
we may discover in our next unwritten
breath.

An Answered Prayer

A man walked alone with his thoughts and feelings.
The week’s events had left him reeling.
Silence was something he just couldn’t find.

So he sat out a going nowhere
The wind blew where he once had had hair
He tried to forget all about the grind.

He passed beneath the railroad tracks.
The sun sank lower on his back.
And finally he was with him alone.

Beneath his feet the gravel crunches.
And peace falls over him in bunches.
As he turns on the flashlight on his phone.

He rests upon a fallen trunk.
Gets rid of anxiety junk.
But suddenly he’s startled by a sound.

“Hey you, young man, what is your name?”
“It’s Frederick.  I ask you the same.”
We’ll get to that, young man, all in due time.

You sought me out young man, you see.
This is my land.  That there’s my tree.
With honest answers we’ll forego the fine.”

“How would you know if I spoke true?
I could say anything to you.
And you’d be none the wiser, don’t you know?”

“I’ll tell you son, truth I can tell.
And I know lies, son, just as well,
For your sake, just have faith that it is so.

Believe it or not, you sought me out
By walking, running from self doubt
No one sits on this tree here by mistake.

What can I do to satisfy?
To dry the tears that cloud your eyes?
Tell me son, tell me what will it take?”

Frederick knew his words were true.
He did as he felt he must do,
And laid it all out right there for the man.

“I turned my back on her, I did.
I was a young and frightened kid.
Nobody, I thought really loved me so.

I ran away and looked for signs
That she truly really could be mine.
I didn’t think that she would really go.

I’ve walked around for years in grief
I’ve buried all this pain beneath
A smile, a grimace, or an angry word.

Not one who knows me figured out
What my big struggle was about,
But you can know for sure that it is her.”

“Do you think you’re the first, young man?
You think that I don’t have a plan
To bring your dear beloved to your arms?

I guarantee you son, I do,
And I’ll put in some work for you,
But first you’re gonna have to do some harm.

I guarantee you’ll kill no dove,
And soon she will be mad in love,
But first you have to give me what is mine.

My neighbor took my land away.
A dirty lawyer trick he played.
And when he did you know he crossed the line.

Yonder under tree he naps.
Creep up on him with this old axe,
and seperate his body from his head.”

Frederick turned his head and looked.
He grabbed the axe while his hands shook.
And slowly he followed where he was led.

The chest rose up, the chest fell down,
An axe was swung through to the ground,
A pool of black reflected a full moon.

“Good job young man, you’ve made me proud.
The bastard boasted way too loud.
Your woman will be in your arms real soon.”

“You told me you’d tell me your name.”
“Son I know you know this game.
I don’t think I need to tell you a thing.”

Ol Fred nearly bumped his head.
He woke up and fell out of bed.
Awakened by vibration and a ring.

Salted Earth

We have been told by the highest court
That we are beings of an inferior order
And must play their rigged game
Without due process
Having only the right to labor
And no right to our life or love

Embodied Love

The sky is a patchwork of blues
At dusk,
Light greys and scratches of light pink.
It’s still hot
though the light, fat rain is drumming up a cooler breeze here and there,
like when you open the convenient store fridge
to grab your soda, and the ac isn’t quite doing its thing
cause it’s been working a little too hard.
All I need now
Is an old person who tells it like it is
With a little humor
Leaving off the harsh and bitter
The cruel and painful
Bits that eat at you and crawl into your skin
pulling at the base of your neck and constricting your mouth
It is all too easy, child.
It comes and goes
It is all as you decide it to be
Every moment a miracle
Savor your life, savor every breath, savor every taste and every smile
It all only lasts a while
The sun goes down in glory and rises again every morning.
Bathe in color and relish the conversations you are blessed to have
Drink in the easiness that caresses your comforted heart.
We are all here for a good squeeze
And a scraped knee
And a cold ice cream float
and cool water on our naked bodies,
Embodied love,
lovely with our hope and delight.

A New Chapter

Just like that the chapter is over

You’ve turned the page and finally,

Things start turning out like you need them to

Your plans fall in place

Not all at once but

Puzzle pieces,

And your dreams are running

Like wild mustangs in Montana

The adrenaline coursing faster

Than a freight train

But the peace of it all,

That’s like seeing the first

Lightning bug of the year

take it as a sign

take it as a sign
irony
as it’s a familiar
sign
yield / stop / no U turn
I am not what I was
never will be again
leave it all behind.
leave it all behind.
I asked for something small and received even smaller
that says it all

yet

when I look around
someone, though a different someone
is still here
present
accounted for
calling out my name and albeit
not the same
I belong
take it as a sign
once more
I belong

sleep

the simplicity
of the collapse
of the pillow
against my head
& the fold of the blanket
across my body

somehow,
even alone,
i find solace

The Chaser

Oh I think you
Would’ve loved
Her
She would have
Chased you
Contorted to
Fit you
Made you
So happy
To be so
Cherished
She would
Have made it
So easy
To love her

She would have
Reflected your
Best parts
Right back
At you

She was something

Sometimes

I miss her

Home

Searching the world over
Thinking there is a place called home

Journeying through years
Overcoming trials and tumult

Learning and loving
Discovering our true home
is
Out of this world
