The Little Horse Boy

The guard pays the boy and leaves him the horse
in a sunlit meadow by the oaks.

He puts his watch in the boy’s hand and taps
the hour of his return with his fingernail.

The boy pulls the wide strap tight
and stares at the fake gold.

Beside him, the horse
nibbles at wild grass.

The boy traps the sun in the dial
turning his thin wrist,
reaching out into the light.

The deep red glow of the horse,
the golden bursts from the watch –
precious things not his to keep.

And yet this joy is his alone –
who could take it away?

Meanwhile, the horse
wanders into the trees
and sinks out of sight
like a ring lost in the sea.

Performance Review

Waking up
makes me angry.
I gamble
with crushed beans.

What is it today?

Anxiety in a mug,
or a cup of sanity?
My boss
will give the verdict.

Should it fail,
it clearly means
I need more.

Loopman Smith

arm axle
shoulder praxis
fascist raze interior blaze

I don’t read books
I write poetry
burn what doesn’t appeal

holocaust definition
animal inside embers
make ash over mincemeat

impersonal farce
I barf myself here
in tongue twists for you
resisting straightforward’s

and truth

Morning Improv

Nothing new to sing.
My throat opens up to bolts
from the blue and otherwise.

Poem

summer and its vagueness

     summer
and its vagueness
starts and stops
endless days, sunlight
thoughts, plans, actions
rest
yet harder work than ever
it seems so, anyway
will I ever see someone again who I cared for
hear from a friend
wear a dress to work now that everything has changed
the absences
voices not heard
answers though, solidly placed upon me
freedom is saying “thanks but no thanks”
not stopping to imagine what if
this morning I am truly content
despite not knowing what is beyond
June, July, August
today’s dictionary tells me ambiguity equals
    joy

Illumination

if I could master my own illumination:

let strangers peek through Snell’s Window—
they peer from just below the surface
through a liquid light
encircling me in fluid frame

let my love see me through his hands,
each caress a gentle kaleidoscoped turn of seasons:

autumnal amber hues pulsing between branches’ bustling leaves,
winter’s pastel palette settling itself among ammil,
springtime sun stretching through abiding apricity and reaching for
summer sunset bathing my bended body in engilded glow

let me see myself—

      myself

suspended in stellar sequence,
somewhere between bioluminescence
& the Fata Morgana

Dear Wish

You’re a crave
Of many colors

We strap you to stars
That surf the night sky

Etch you on coins
Tossed to a watery resting

Crack holiday bones
To get our way

A fallen eyelash
Floats desire

We huff the dust
From dying dandelions

Attach you to lists
For family and friends

Awaken you from the deep
Of genie bottle or magic lamp

Set your candles on fire
Then blow you out

But it’s not all
Bad

Foundations of hope
Honor your name

Our best ones cover
Any occasion

Even Disney dances
Puts you to music

We’re a strange bunch
Whimsical in our yearnings

I wish you well!

Spring

Sticky lips from cherry syrup

73 degrees

I turn the AC on in my car

My steering wheel shakes

Tongue tucked neatly behind my teeth

A bubble of carbonation in my throat

A pit of hunger sits in my gut

I still can’t get enough sunshine

Spearmint

Splashes of ridged green spears
filled her yard in columns of biblical promise,
sweet versatile herb.

Its growth took over the south end
with underground roots, twined  deep
searching for moisture in city clumps of dirt and rock.

It weaves intricate trajectories
along the battered fence row. waiting in patience
for her aged hands to snap off several leaves for tomato salad.

When picked it released its prized fragrance
embracing  her like a savory, satin shawl
or the warm scent of a long-lost lover.

She remembers braiding its green branches
as delicate wreaths to lay gently upon the heads
of her daughters, halos of grace.
